Karamarko says allowances for newborns most probably as of Sept 1

First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko said on Wednesday that the payment of the allowances in the amount of EUR 1,000 for each new-born baby would most probably start on September 1.

Karamarko said this during Question Time in parliament when the question concerning newborns' allowances was raised by MP Domagoj Hajdukovic of the Social Democrats (SDP) who said that the measure announced by Karamarko's HDZ party during the election campaign had turned into a mockery on social networks.

"This is a deception of voters ... or are you simply not capable of figuring out a model according to which these allowances would be paid out?" Hajdukovic asked Karamarko who said that the new government was in office for slightly more than two months.

"You had four years and you had done nothing about that issue ... " Karamarko replied.

He recalled that HRK 100 million have been secured in this year's budget for this purpose, reiterating that the payment of allowances would start on September 1.

Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic announced that the payment of scholarships of the student support foundation would start in the near future and thus answered to a question by Roma minority MP Veljko Kajtazi who complained that this year's procedure for awarding scholarships had not yet started.

The prime minister explained that there was a delay with scholarships after the former head of the student foundation resigned and a new one had not been appointed, The PM however assured deputies that money for this purpose had been secured and that the procedure of awarding scholarships would be launched soon.
