Ivan Vrdoljak elected new HNS leader

Ivan Vrdoljak was elected new leader of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) at an election convention in Zagreb on Saturday, as the only candidate for the post.

Predrag Stromar was elected first deputy leader, and Anka Mrak Taritas and Srdjan Gjurkovic were elected deputy leaders.

Addressing those present, Vrdoljak said that the HNS would remain a pivotal civic centrist party, equally distant from the left and the right, offering support to the middle class. He said that the HNS would work on removing populism and extremism from politics and society.

Speaking of economic challenges, Vrdoljak said that the positive trends in industry should be sustained at all costs, stressing that the focus should be on further increasing exports and encouraging competitiveness, growth and private investments, along with further liberalisation of the domestic market.

His predecessor, Vesna Pusic, was declared honorary leader of the party.
