International airshow starts in Varazdin

Several thousand people from Croatia and neighbouring countries gathered in the northwestern town of Varazdin on Saturday for the Croatian International Airshow Varazdin (CIAV).

The crowd was able to enjoy overflights by supersonic fighter jets and spectacular performances by the Croatian Air Force display team "Wings of Storm" and parachutists.

The Wings of Storm recently won an award for the overall best performance at the world's largest military airshow, the Royal International Air Tatoo (RIAT), at Fairford airbase in the United Kingdom.

The aerobatics were performed, among others, by Italian Luca Bertossio, the winner of the gold medal at the World Air Games in Dubai in 2015, Slovenian Peter Podlunsek, a European vice-champion in acrobatic flying, and Croatian flying ace Branimir Ambrekovic.

The airshow ends on Sunday.
