Interior Ministry reorganisation means 339 organisational units less

Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic says that according to the preliminary plan for the Interior Ministry's reorganisation, it will have 339 fewer organisational units at the national level and at least 1,500 people will be "lowered" to police station level.

Orepic made the statement on Monday at a forum held in the Zadar Police Department where employees were informed of the planned reorganisation, the ministry reported on Tuesday.

The  territorial reorganisation of the ministry, which Orepic presented in mid-April, foresees the merger of 20 existing police departments into five large ones, while providing more police officers in the field, which is expected to improve security and lead to less crime.

Orepic once again rejected claims that the reorganisation actually meant regionalisation.

"This is not regionalisation because this profession cannot be restricted by space. When we embarked on this task, the first thing that we were accused of is that this is a prelude to a territorial regionalisation of Croatia. That is not so. We are restructuring the ministry only in terms of organisation and space to make it more functional and operational," Orepic said.

He called on senior police officials to submit their recommendations and comments on the proposed reorganisation plan during the public debate by June 30 so that they could be incorporated in the proposal.
