HDZ says has options for better tourism

Croatia saw 75 million tourist nights over eight months of 2016, eight million more in comparison to last year, and this record is a result of the work of everyone in tourism and the synergy of the public and private sectors, on which which the Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) tourism platform is based, the party's officials said on Thursday, adding that it had solutions to make tourism even more competitive.

Outlining the HDZ's tourism plank, incumbent Tourism Minister Anton Kliman and HDZ Tourism Committee chair Gari Capelli said they planned to make tourism more competitive by developing continental and health tourism, by continuing to invest and by hiring 15,000 people over four years.

Kliman said August 2016 was a record month with 29.6 million nights, about 2.3 million more on the year. "All figures this season confirm that we have recognised the trends and could manage them," he said, thanking all tourism employees "on an excellent season." He said the ministry had worked on many projects in recent months, highlighting the recategorisation of private accommodation in order to equalise quality standards.

Capelli said the HDZ planned to hire 15,000 tourism workers over four years through inter-departmental cooperation and investments.

He said health tourism held big potential for brown and greenfield investments as it could it could function all year and in every part of the country. At least "five or six health tourism projects and about EUR 400 million in investments" are ready in Croatia, he added.

Thirteen million tourists visited Croatia in the first eight months of 2016, generating 75.1 million nights, the National Tourist Board said on Thursday.
