HDZ outraged by PM's nomination of Vesna Pusic for UN Secretary-General

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic's secret nomination of his colleague Vesna Pusic for the post of UN Secretary-General is outrageous and scandalous and constitutes an attack on the state and the Constitution, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) secretary for international relations Miro Kovac said on Friday.

Kovac made the statement at an extraordinary news conference at the HDZ offices, noting that the public had learned from the media about Milanovic's support for Pusic's candidacy for UN Secretary-General.

He said that such a decision should not have been made by an outgoing government and without consultation with the president of the state, "who under the Constitution participates in shaping the country's foreign policy and has a say when decisions on the appointment of ambassadors are made, let alone a decision on a candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General."

Asked if the opposition of one of Croatia's strongest parties to the candidacy of a Croatian politician for an important position in global politics would harm Croatia, Kovac would not give a straightforward answer, saying only that the HDZ would like to have been consulted on the matter.
