HDZ electing president, incumbent only candidate

The ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is electing its president on Sunday, with incumbent leader Tomislav Karamarko the only candidate, and he did not vote for himself, saying "it wouldn't be good" if he did.

This is the first time that an HDZ leader will be elected on a one-member-one-vote basis.

Speaking to the press at a polling station in Zagreb, Karamarko regretted that he did not have an opponent, recalling that four years ago, when he was elected party president, he had four. He said today's election was a demonstration of democracy. "I see it as a confirmation of my work so far, the work of my team and the past five election victories."

Karamarko announced that his priorities over the next four years would be the economy, quality of living, job creation, investments, and preventing the emigration of young people.

Asked about media speculation that an early election would be held after an HDZ assembly in May, Karamarko said, "Unlikely. We are in a political marriage with (the) Bridge (party) which is good for now. We always encounter some obstacles but deal with them."

Voting in today's HDZ election is taking place at 778 polling stations in Croatia and 18 abroad. Polling stations close at 7 pm.
