HDZ to elected party chief on Sunday - Plenkovic only candidate

Andrej Plenkovic, is expected to be elected as the new Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president on Sunday, July 17, as the only candidate, following the principle "one member-one vote".

Approximately HDZ 220,000 members will be able to cast their votes at town, municipal and regional election commissions. Plenkovic will replace Tomislav Karamarko who resigned as HDZ chief on June 21 after he failed to form a parliamentary majority which he promised to his party.

Karamarko was re-elected party president as the only candidate on 17 April 2016 when he received the support of more than 90,000 party members.

Plenkovic received more than 35,000 signatures of support from HDZ members for his candidacy. In his election platform, Plenkovic stated that his main objective would be to restore the trust of voters through a credible and consistent HDZ policy. He is confident the HDZ can once again be the leader of modernisation with the full respect for traditional values as well as the central development force in Croatia.

Plenkovic also announced the HDZ was open for talks and partnerships with parties of the Patriotic Coalition or those outside the Coalition.

Plenkovic will be the 5th president of the Croatian Democratic Union. Franjo Tudjman led the party since it was founded in 1989 until his death in December 1999. Ivo Sanader was the second president (April 2000-June 2009). He was replaced by Jadranka Kosor. Karamarko was at the helm of the party since 2012.
