HDZ chief says Commission report is assessment of ex-government

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko has said that the European Commission's comments in the latest country report with statements that in 2015 the then Croatian government failed to carry out the Commission's recommendations to overcome macroeconomic imbalances was an assessment of the performance of the cabinet led by Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic.

This is how the European Commission has evaluated the work of the (former) government in its four-year term, Karamarko told reporters on Friday in the coastal town of Trogir where he arrived for the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the local HDZ branch.

They were very vociferous, they were more occupied with ideological matters and did not implement any of those measures (Commission's recommendations) and "they pushed Croatia to the verge of economic disaster," Karamarko said in his comment to the EC country report that established that Croatia has made limited progress concerning five recommendations and substantial progress in only one of the recommendations regarding efforts to remedy the excessive macroeconomic imbalance.

Karamarko said that the new government had the strength and knowledge to implement the recommendations made by the Commission.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic, a few cabinet ministers, and European Commission Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis held talks on this issue.
