HDZ chief fears security issues may overshadow economic woes

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko said on Sunday that he was afraid that Croatia's security problems might exceed in importance the economic problems at one point, but he expressed hope that this would not happen.

Just before his meeting with HDZ deputies to the European Parliament regarding the topic of the security situation and the migrant crisis in the HDZ headquarters in Zagreb, Karamarko was asked by reporters whether he had received any response from the Most (Bridge) regarding his proposal that the ongoing negotiations on a post-election coalition and the next government should also include the topic of national security, and the HDZ chief answered that he had not received any answer.

"I am afraid of times, which I hope will never come, when the security problem may become the issue No.1 and the economic issues, No.2." Karamarko said before entering the HDZ main offices where he had convened the meeting with Croatian MEPs of the HDZ on security challenges.

MEP Andrej Plenkovic said that the recent terrorist attack in Paris, and stepping up security, intelligence and judicial cooperation among European Union member-states as well as the ongoing refugee crisis would be on the agenda of the European Parliament. It is good to conduct consultations on those topics in (our) party, too, Plenkovic added.

This Croatian MEP said that he advocated the appliance of three principles in dealing with the refugee crisis: the first one is about the dignity of human beings and solidarity and assistance to be offered to those who are fleeing Syria and other war-hit countries; the second is about honouring the national rules and regulations as well as the European acquis and international conventions, and; third is about having in mind the safety and security of EU citizens, which requires the registration and security checks of those who are entering the EU.
