HDSSB, Hrid in favour of snap election; HSS, HSP AS, ex-Bridge MPs against

The president of the regional HDSSB party, Branimir Glavas, told President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Friday that his party was in favour of snap elections, adding that within a few hours the HDSSB would decide whether to put a motion for the parliament's dissolution before Speaker Zeljko Reiner.

The HDSSB sees a stability factor in the president, Glavas said, adding that Grabar-Kitarovic had political responsibility regarding the direction Croatia would take in the coming weeks and months.

"The president is the one that needs to put a stop to this, analyse and assess the situation Croatia is in. The interests of political parties are one thing and reality and Croatia's interests are another," Glavas said.

He also said he was aware that early elections cannot take place before the first half of September.

After consultations with the president, three former Bridge deputies - Ivan Lovrinic, Juro Martinovic and Ivan Misic - said they were ready to support attempts to form a new parliamentary majority and that if that was not possible, they would support snap elections.

Deputies of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) and the Croatian Party of Rights - Ante Starcevic (HSP AS) share this position, while the Hrid party is against a parliamentary reshuffle and in favour of early elections.

Lovrinovic did not specifically say whether or not his parliamentary group would support Zdravko Maric of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) as new prime minister designate.

Branko Hrg of the HSS told reporters after the talks in the President's Office that his party would not make its participation in the forming of a new parliamentary majority conditional on anything. He underscored that it was necessary to attempt to form a new parliamentary majority because otherwise too much time would be wasted.

He said his party had not supported Maric as new PM designate.

HSP AS leader and Deputy Parliament Speaker Ivan Tepes told the press his party supported motions for a government reshuffle and Maric as the new PM designate.

Hrid leader Drago Prgomet claims snap elections are the best choice and that his party will sign a motion to dissolve parliament.
