Grabar-Kitarovic says ambassadors mustn't interfere in internal affairs

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic commented on Saturday on a meeting between EU and US ambassadors held in Zagreb on Thursday on freedom of the press in Croatia, saying that in principle ambassadors "can't and mustn't interfere in the internal affairs of the host country."

Austrian Ambassador to Croatia Andreas Wiedenhoff said on Twitter on Thursday that he had a "very interesting meeting with colleagues and friends on freedom of the media, a key priority of our foreign policy."

"I'd find that very odd, since ambassadors can't and mustn't interfere in the internal affairs of the host country," Grabar-Kitarovic told Croatian reporters in Bratislava, where she was attending a global security forum, when asked about that meeting.

The ambassadors of the US, Norway, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands responded to Wiedenhoff on social networks, confirming their participation in the meeting.

US Ambassador Julieta Valls Noyes wrote that she had useful talks with her colleagues ambassadors about media freedom in Croatia.

The Dutch Embassy said via Twitter that freedom of the media was key to every democracy, that that was what they had talked about and would continue to promote.
