Foreign ministry condemns attack on Franciscan guardian in Bac

The Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Ministry on Friday condemned the attack the guardian of the Franciscan monastery in the Vojvodina town of Bac, northern Serbia, and asked that the perpetrator be brought to justice.

"The Foreign and European Affairs Ministry in the strongest terms condemns the attack which took place on February 26 in the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bac, on guardian Josip Spehar. We expect perpetrators to be brought to justice," the ministry said in a press release.

Police have arrested a person suspected to attacking, robbing and severely injuring father Spehar. Police said that the suspect's initials were DJ. P. and they found stolen church relics and money on his persons. The suspect has been placed in a 48-hour detention.

The authorities in Bac claim the only motive behind the attack was robbery, while representatives of the Croat minority in Vojvodina said this was not an isolated case and that attacks on representatives of the Catholic Church or Croats have elements of crimes motivated by hatred towards Croats.
