Exit polls: SDP- and HDZ-led coalitions neck and neck in parl. election

According to exit polls, the Social Democratic Party (SDP)-led coalition "Croatia is Growing" has won 56 seats and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)-led "Patriotic Coalition" has won also 56 seats in Sunday's parliamentary election.

The platform of independent slates which goes by the name "MOST (Bridge)" has won 18 seats in the 151-seat legislature, according to the exit polls, conducted by the Ipsos Puls agency for national TV stations.

The exit polls show that this was a cliffhanger election.

Also, three seats have been won by the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Human Shield Party each, and two seats have been won by the party led by Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic and by the regional HDSSB party each.

The State Election Commission (DIP) will be releasing early election returns as of 2200 hours.

Some 3.8 million Croatians in the country and abroad were eligible to vote in the election for the 8th legislature.
