EUR 5.6M energy renovation project underway in Lepoglava jail

The energy renovation of the penitentiary in the northern town of Lepoglava is under way and this project, worth 42 million kuna (approximately 5.6 million euros), will bring about savings of two million kuna annually.

Construction and Zoning Minister Lovro Kuscevic on Tuesday came to Lepoglava to see the repair and renovation works on the oldest prison in Croatia.

After the visit, Kuscevic said that the project, one of three large-scale energy renovation projects concerning public institutions in Varazdin County, was aimed at improving living conditions in the penitentiary, boosting the local building sector and helping Croatia to fulfil a commitment undertaken with its admission to the European Union regarding energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Currently, there are 500 prison inmates and 410 employees in this institution.

The repair and renovation works encompass roof repair and insulation, building a facade for thermal insulation, installing energy efficient windows and doors, increasing the performance of the lighting systems and introducing a new heating system.
