Environment protection minister advocates zero waste policy

The new Environment Protection Minister, Slaven Dobrovic of the Bridge party, said on Monday that he would wait for findings of an analysis to decide whether the ministry would remain in the ZagrebTower building or leave those premises.

I have heard that the relocation of ministry personnel (into ZagrebTower) has stirred up great public interest and that there are some questions difficult to answer, and I will definitely analyse this matter and <x<after that I will take my position, Dorbovic said after the handover ceremony.

Asked about priorities, Dobrovic said that waste management was a burning issue "that is the issue of regional (waste management) centres, their lack of functionality, their high costs and a lack of compatibility with circular economy and with efforts to build a resource efficient society, as it is imperative in Europe."

In this context he said that plans to build 13 waste management centres across Croatia was not in agreement with the "Zero Waste" concept which he advocates.

Asked what would happen with the waste management centres for whose construction funds from the EU had been absorbed, the new minister said that the responsibility lay with policy makers in the previous period.
