Election Commission to reply to Karamarko's accusations Monday

The State Election Commission (DIP) will on Monday present its position on suspicions expressed by Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko about irregularities that allegedly affected his party during the 8 November parliamentary election.

Karamarko, who is Deputy  Prime Minister in the PM Tihomir Oreskovic cabinet, said on Saturday that "there are indications" that his party was defrauded of five or six parliamentary seats in the election night and promised that this would be investigated.

The DIP, a state body in charge of implementation of parliamentary elections, told Hina on Sunday that it would present its position on Karamarko's suspicions on Monday.

"In that election night, there are indications that we were defrauded of five or six seats, and we will investigate that," said Karamarko in the southern town of Imotski during a celebration of the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the local HDZ branch.

Croatia's election for the eighth parliament ended inconclusively, as the HDZ-led coalition won 59 seats, and the Social Democrat Party (SDP)-led coalition mustered 56 seats while its ally the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) mustered three seats in the 151-seat legislature, according to official results provided by the DIP. An alliance of slates with independent candidates and the Bridge party candidates emerged third with 19 seats.

SDP official and former Parliament Speaker Josip Leko said on Saturday that Karamarko's claim about the election fraud undermined Croatia's democratic image.
