EC: 134.6 mln euro from ESI funds for Dubrovnik Airport upgrade

The European Commission has approved a project worth 214.9 million euro for the upgrade of Dubrovnik Airport, 134.6 million euro of which will come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Commission reported on Tuesday.

"It is great news for business, tourism and for everybody using the airport," Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu, said.

This major project is co-financed under the 2007-2013 Transport Operational Programme.

Dubrovnik Airport is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Its expansion will contribute to international and national accessibility of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, directly benefiting the Croatian economy.

The airport is currently working at maximum capacity and with the expansion it will increase its capacities and be able to cater for more travellers and passengers which should reduce processing and waiting times.

The new terminal building will meet the requirements of the Schengen border code.

The Croatian government adopted a decision in early April 2015 to finance the upgrade and extension of the Dubrovnik airport in Cilipi, which will be co-financed with 145 million euro from EC public funds.
