Culture Ministry not officially notified of Jewish non-attendance at Jasenovac commemoration

Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic said on Friday the ministry had not received an official note that representatives of Jewish communities would not attend a commemoration for the victims of the Jasenovac WWII concentration camp.

Responding to questions from the press, he said he regretted that because Jasenovac was a place of special respect, notably for the innocent Jewish victims killed there. He said he would attend the commemoration.

Roma minority MP Veljko Kajtazi said he would hold a meeting today with representatives of the Roma National Minority Council about attending the commemoration and that he would respect their decision.

The Coordinating Committee of Jewish Communities has decided against attending this year's commemoration because of the "policy of inaction" regarding changes to the exhibits of the Jasenovac Museum and "current political events relating to the downplaying and reviving of Ustashism."
