Culture minister receives media freedom activists

Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic on Friday received Tom Henheffer, the executive director of the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), and Maja Pleic of the Zagreb-based Centre for Peace Studies, the Croatian Culture Ministry stated in a press release.

Henheffer, who was visiting Croatia to get an insight into the state of affairs in media freedoms, conveyed concerns to the minister about reports on attempts to limit free expression and about occurrences of censorship in media, with special emphasis being put on the national broadcaster HRT as well as on the Electronic Media Agency and on financing of non-profit media.

Minister Hasanbegovic presented the ministry's position on those topics and assessed that CJFE's worries were unfounded.

The interlocutors agreed that it was necessary to launch dialogue on media policies encompassing all stakeholders concerned.

Hasanbegovic pointed out the openness of his ministry to various initiatives, including cooperation with that Canadian organisation.

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression is an organization set up to protect the right to free expression in Canada and around the world.
