Croatian Social Democrats to elect party leader on Nov 19

The presidency of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) decided unanimously that it would propose to the party's Main Committee that the first round of the election of the new SDP leader be held on 19 November and that the next intra-party election convention be held on 3 December, an SDP Vice-President, Milanka Opacic, told the press after the presidency's session on Friday afternoon.

The election of the new leader will be organised in line with the principle "one member-one vote".

The Main Committee is expected to endorse the presidency's proposals on Saturday, which will mark the start of deadlines for the election procedure.

The incumbent Zoran Milanovic decided not to rerun for the leadership after his party failed to win the recent early parliamentary election.

So far, five party officials -- Tonino Picula, Ranko Ostojic, Domagoj Hajdukovic, Vesna Skulic and Orsat Miljenic -- have stated that they will run for the leadership.
