Croatian president says expats expect much from PM-Designate

Croatian emigrants expect a lot from Prime Minister-Designate Tihomir Oreskovic, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said on Sunday on a visit to Chicago, Croatian Radio-Television (HRT) reported on Monday.

The president is spending Monday and Tuesday on a working visit to Minnesota, while she spent Sunday with the Croatian community in Chicago.

She said the community's expectations of Oreskovic were high. "One can see a new level of optimism arising among Croatian citizens and the Croatian people in the homeland as well as here in the world. I believe that through this unity in achieving common goals, a better life in a better Croatia, we can indeed do a lot."

At a donor evening at the Croatian Cultural Center of Chicago, about 600 expatriates gave Grabar-Kitarovic a cheque for US$ 10,000 for an association of disabled persons from Vinkovci, eastern Croatia.

She is visiting Minnesota on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of cooperation between Croatia and Minnesota.
