Croatian president attends ceremony marking 25th anniversary of Slovenia's independence

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Friday wrapped up her two-day official visit to Slovenia by attending a ceremony in Ljubljana, marking the 25th anniversary of Slovenia's independence.

Slovenia declared independence in 1991 on the same day as Croatia.

The ceremony was also attended by the Presidents of Italy Sergio Mattarella, Hungary Janos Ader, Austria Heinz Fischer and Germany Joachim Gauck.

Commenting on challenges which the EU is now faced with following Brexit, Slovenian President Borut Pahor said Europe is faced with new challenges and an alternative in which member states can opt for domination of national policies of a path leading to a federal Europe which, according to him, is the best possible solution.

Remaining in the European Union and its survival is a vital national interest for Slovenia, as are its relations with the neighbouring countries, Pahor said.

Congratulating Slovenia on the anniversary of its independence, Grabar-Kitarovic said European statesmen must invest joint effort to help the European project continue.

We need a clear vision, leadership and courage to stop the negative trends and make the EU even stronger, Grabar-Kitarovic said.
