Croatian military police mark 25th anniversary

The Croatian military police on Wednesday observed their 25th anniversary at the Croatia barracks with a ceremony which heard that the military police were founded in the midst of the Homeland War and that in 2003 they were the first Croatian military unit to participate in NATO's ISAF peace mission in Afghanistan.

Congratulating the officers, the president's adviser on national security, Maja Cavlovic, said the military police grew through the battles of the 1991-95 Homeland War. She said 120 military police were killed in the war and that Croatia was still tracing seven missing officers.

Cavlovic said the military police had pulled the Croatian Armed Forces towards a bigger engagement in international cooperation, exercises and operations.

We are now witness to the biggest strategic reshuffle in Europe since World War II, so we are making the necessary adjustments with our NATO allies. It is especially important to show solidarity with NATO's eastern members, with which we are connected through friendship and a similar history, Cavlovic said.

Big security challenges are coming from NATO's southern wing, such as foreign fighters in Croatia's neighbours or the migrant flow, which brings Croatia new tasks, and the military police will have a key role in them, she added.

The military police were also congratulated by Chief-Of-Staff General Mirko Sundov.
