A solution to the refugee and migrant crisis must be European and comprehensive, and Turkey's role in it is crucial, Croatian Deputy Foreign Minister Zdravka Busic said in Brussels on Tuesday.
Busic was for the first time attending a meeting of the EU General Affairs Council, which consists of the foreign ministers of the member states. The main item on the agenda was the migrant crisis, which will also be the main topic of an EU summit in Brussels later this week. An agreement with Turkey on the migrant crisis is expected to be finalised at the summit.
"High hopes are being pinned on this agreement with Turkey, which is a key country. Understanding has also been shown for the situation in Greece and for the problems that country is having with a large number of refugees," Busic said.
She said that "fear of alternative routes has been expressed" and that serious steps should be taken to prevent that. "We need a comprehensive, European approach because the future of Europe will be at stake unless the refugee crisis has been resolved."
