Croatia drawing up national ports development plan

Croatia's Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Ministry has begun to prepare a national plan for the development of seaports of county and local significance, a strategic document which is a precondition for absorption of money from European Union funds.

The 6.02-million-kuna programme will be co-financed with 85% percent from EU funds.

"Drawing up this strategic document is very important not only for the ministry but also for the whole of Croatia," Transport and Infrastructure Minister Oleg Butkovic said on Thursday.

The EU operational programme puts at our disposal funds for ports' infrastructure, and we cannot withdraw a penny without this document, the minister explained.

The strategic document is likely to be finalised in Q4 2016.

Butkovic said that some 40 million kuna would be earmarked for the national funds for ports and port authorities this year.
