Croatia down five places on World Press Freedom Index

World press freedom deteriorated in all parts of the world in 2015, including in Croatia, which dropped five places in the rankings in comparison to 2014, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says in its annual report.

The World Press Freedom Index ranks 180 countries on pluralism, media independence, self-censorship, the rule of law, and transparency.

“All of the indicators show a deterioration," RSF secretary general Christophe Deloire told Agence France-Presse.

The 2015 World Press Freedom Index ranks Croatia 63rd, while in 2014 it was 58th. Of Croatia's neighbours, Slovenia is ranked 40th, Serbia 59th, Hungary 67th, Bosnia and Herzegovina 68th, Italy 77th and Montenegro 106th.

Europe remains the region where press is freer than elsewhere, with Finland the highest ranked country for the sixth consecutive year, followed by the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark.

Although the situation deteriorated everywhere in the world, the decline was sharpest in Latin America, notably because of murders of reporters.

The lowest ranked countries remain China, Syria, North Korea, and Eritrea.
