Court upholds indictment against former Social Democrat head of Sisak County

The Zagreb County Court on Thursday upheld an indictment against the former Social Democratic Party (SDP) head of Sisak County, Marina Lovric Merzel, who is charged along with five other persons with a number of crimes, including bribe taking, money laundering and embezzlement of public money.

Lovric Merzel and her attorney objected to shortcomings in the proceedings conducted by the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), insisting that the case against her was political persecution.

USKOK prosecutor Martina Jaklin said that possible shortcomings in the indictment mentioned by the accused and her attorney would be dealt with during the trial.

Lovric Merzel was arrested in April 2014 and spent more than five months in investigative custody. The other accused in the case are businessman Zeljko Zuzic, the chair of the Supervisory Board of the Ceste Sisak road maintenance company, Silvijo Kobescak, Bernard Popac, Lovric Merzel's nephew Dalibor Rozankovic, and a senior member of the staff of the Hrvatske Sume forest management company, Zvonko Rozic.
