Children from Sisak WWII concentration camp commemorated

The Serb National Council and the Sisak Serb National Minority Council organised at the Sisak children's cemetery on Saturday the traditional Remembrance Day for war orphans who died at the Sisak children's concentration camp during World War II.

The camp was set up on 3 August 1942 and was in operation until January 1943 and it is assumed that over 6,000 children passed through it. About 2,000 who died there due to illness and poor living conditions are buried at the Sisak children's cemetery, 1,200 were returned to parents or the next of kin, while 2,200 were taken home by Sisak residents.

The commemoration was attended, among others, by surviving concentration camp inmates and representatives of Serbian and Bosnian inmates' associations and the Serbian Embassy to Croatia.

Speaking on behalf of the inmates' associations, Slavko Milovanovic said that about 10,000 Serb children were killed in the 1941-45 Nazi-styled Independent State of Croatia. He condemned "the manifestations of neo-Nazism and neo-fascism as well as the negation of the suffering of all innocent victims."

"Only with truth can the Croatian and Serbian peoples build better relations. Victims must be remembered every day because tragic events are reoccurring," he said.
