Caretaker ministers have reservations about possibly lower wages

Ministers in the outgoing cabinet on Wednesday were rather restrained in their comments on announcements that the new government would cut office-holders and lawmakers' salaries, and warned that this austerity measure would not have a great economic effect but that it could lead to a possibility that some employees in a ministerial department have a higher pay than the minister at the helm of that ministry.

Finance Minister Boris Lalovac said that he was not against the curtailment of salaries of office-holders and MPs, which would save some 25 million kuna annually, but he did not believe that this would produce any marked effect on the budget but would rather send out a moral message.

Environment Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlovic said that cost-cutting was always welcome but "one should see the point and reason for that".

Construction Minister Anka Mrak Taritas warned that it should be seen if the announcements by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Bridge party could yield savings or were rather being used for populist purposes.

"Qualified professionals will not be willing to work for low salaries, this has already been a problem in our administration," she added.
