Social Democratic Party (SDP) member of Parliament Orsat Miljenic said on Wednesday that the decision of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), the SDP's partner in the People's Coalition in the recent early parliamentary election, to support Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Andrej Plenkovic as prime minister-designate was a betrayal of voters.
"Each party works for itself. At this moment, it is unclear who is in power and who is in the opposition. This is the HSS's internal matter but no one has the right to cheat voters," said Miljenic.
He recalled that the HSS was part of the SDP-led People's Coalition in the recent election and that votes that helped the HSS enter the parliament were actually votes of the People's Coalition.
"That is something the HSS will have to explain to its voters," Miljenic said.
He said that the SDP would be "a true Opposition to the HDZ and its satellites, both old and new ones" and that it would not allow the country to take the course that was already visible, "one where those who have more can do anything and those who have little can't do anything."
Miljenic also said that the HSS's move showed that the SDP should be more careful when choosing coalition partners and deciding whether to form any coalitions at all.
"Naturally, that is not a decision that should be made today or by a single person, but something that we will have to discuss," said Miljenic, who recently announced that he would run for the post of SDP leader.
Miljenic today also said that the head of his campaign would be former Finance Minister Boris Lalovac.
