All Saints' Day commemorated throughout Croatia

All Saints' Day, observed on 1 November by the Roman Catholic Church of Latin rite and various Protestant denominations, is a non-working public holiday in Croatia and this Sunday Croatians marked that solemnity by visiting cemeteries, lighting candles and placing flowers on the graves of their dearest ones as well on the graves of prominent Croatian people and in front of the crosses and monuments erected in tribute to war victims.

Delegations of top state authorities held wreath-laying ceremonies in Zagreb's central cemetery of Mirogoj on Sunday morning, and wreaths were laid by delegations of state and local authorities in Vukovar and other formerly war- stricken areas.

Masses for the dead are being said all the day, and the central religious ceremony is scheduled for 1600 hrs when the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, is due to say the mass in the Christ the King church in Mirogoj Cemetery.

All Souls' Day on 2 November, that follows All Saints' Day, will also be observed by Croatians with attendances at masses and religious rites and visits to graveyards, cemeteries and sites of mass suffering and death in the Second World War and in the Homeland Defence War.
