Health Minister Dario Nakic and Defence Minister Josip Buljevic on Wednesday signed an agreement to establish a helicopter emergency medical service that would operate all year round and in all conditions, with two helicopters to be stationed in Split and on Krk island.
Nakic said the aircraft would provide emergency medical aid to persons on remote islands and that negotiations were under way with the Interior Ministry to secure another base, in Dubrovnik, during the summer.
"The local community has expressed willingness to co-finance that project," he told reporters.
Nakic recalled the problems with the previous helicopter emergency medical service, provided by an Italian company, which he said had transported patients only during the day and only those who were not overweight.
He said the new service would cost HRK 7 million over the next nine months and HRK 10 million annually. He said the previous government had paid this service HRK 127 million annually.
