31,000 signatures collected against higher cost of health insurance

The Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU) reported on Wednesday that in one week it had collected 31,383 signatures against the price rise in supplementary health insurance.

"We launched the campaign to collect signatures against the increase in the price of supplementary health insurance from HRK 70 to HRK 89 in an effort to prevent an unnecessary blow to citizens' pockets in favour of private insurance companies. If the state destroys its system of supplementary health insurance, there is a real danger that elderly people could be charged twice as much by private insurers because they fall into a high risk category or they may be refused insurance all  together. We cannot agree with this because we believe that the existing model, based on solidarity, is financially feasible, good and sustainable," the HSU underscored.

Signatures are being collected around the country in larger towns and an on-line petition has been launched as well.

The HSU is calling on citizens to support the campaign, which will last until the end of the month, to "put a stop to the government's 'reforms' that are being introduced solely at the expense of citizens."

Other pensioners' associations have supported the campaign as has the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Youth Forum, whose members will collect signatures in a sign of support for pensioners in the fight for common rights, a press release says.
