16 Opposition MPs accuse Culture Minister of harming Croatia's image

Sixteen opposition lawmakers submitted an interpellation in parliament concerning Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic's responsibility , accusing him for damaging the country's reputation, undermining freedom of expression and thwarting the development of democratic media space in Croatia.

Opposition MPs from the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Labour Party have requested that parliament discusses and adopts a conclusion whether Hasanbegovic is responsible for the deterioration of the Culture Ministry's, government's and the country's overall reputation.

They request that the government should prepare a national programme for the protection and promotion of the freedom of expression and development of democratic media space with an appropriate budget and that within 30 days it presents its opinion to parliament.

They called on Hasanbegovic to submit a written opinion to parliament of his views on the freedom of expression and media, his decision to dissolve the Council for Electronic Media (VEM), his decision to withhold financial support to non-profit media and of his stance toward the Ustasha regime and its objectives and conduct.
