Katica Hauptfeld, Elizabeta Planinic Businesswomen of Year 2014

Katica Hauptfeld, owner of the Katarina Line travel agency, and Elizabeta Planinic, owner of the Putuj Bolje travel agency and the Cuvari Sjecanja grave care business, have been named businesswomen of the year 2014 by the Women in Adria network of businesswomen, the Zagreb Development Agency and the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.

Hauptfeld was named the winner in the "Inspiring Businesswoman of the Year" category while Planinic won in the "Micro Businesswoman of the Year" category at a ceremony held this past Thursday.

Hauptfeld owns a fleet of tourist boats while Planinic was the first person in Croatia to start a business for grave maintenance four years ago, when she lost her job.

The Financial Agency (FINA) has said that of the total number of businesses in Croatia in 2014, 20.3% (19,972) were owned by women, while 12,144 were co-owned by women.

Bjelovar-Bilogora County has the largest share of women business owners in the business community, 23.1%, followed by the City of Zagreb, where women own 21.5% of local businesses.

Women mostly own service sector businesses (51.7%) and the service sector is the only sector where women are more represented than men. Service trade is followed by social and health care businesses (35.8% of such businesses are owned by women), businesses related to education (33.2%), businesses related to research and technology (29.3%), and catering and tourism businesses (22.7%).
