Young ethnic Croat attacked in Vojvodina

A young man from Sonta was brutally beat up in the Vojvodina town of Apatin on Sunday evening and the Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina (DSHV) claims that he was a victim of an ethnically motivated attack.

The young man suffered severe body injuries, including bite marks on his back, according to unofficial reports from the DSHV.

"This attack on an innocent young man of the Croat background clearly indicates that intolerance toward and the negative image of the Croat ethnic community still exist in the Serbian society, which is is lately resulting in physical violence," the DSHV said in a statement.

The chairman of the commission for monitoring violations of the rights of national minorities with the Croat National Council, Darko Bastovanovic, said this was not the first attack on this young man.

"He has been attacked before - at Catholic Christmas and at an event organised by ethnic Croats. He suffered severe physical injuries during those attacks as well. It is my understanding that the perpetrators of the first two attacks are also responsible for the latest attack," Bastovanovic said.

He added that state authorities never reacted or condemned the attacks.
