Vucic: We'll protect Serbia's interests if Austria and Slovenia suspend Schengen

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that Belgrade would monitor measures expected in Austria and Slovenia, after Vienna announced possible suspension of the Schengen Agreement because of the migrant crisis.

Vucic said said Austria would suspend the agreement in the near future and that Slovenia would do the same immediately after that.

"We are prepared to provide Macedonian police with even more assistance and send additional police troops there... In any case, we will know how to protect our state and national interests," the Serbian PM told the press announcing close cooperation with European countries and expressing conviction Serbia would manage to maintain peace and stability.

"This will not be easy, although the number of refugees is decreasing, but due to weather conditions and not the migrant policy," Vucic said.

Earlier today, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said his country would take appropriate measures if Croatia, Slovenia and Austria make unilateral moves in managing the migrant crisis. After meeting with his Slovenian counterpart Karl Erjavec, Dacic said it was important that all countries on the so called Balkan migrant route keep one another informed of measures and activities being taken.

Dacic also stressed Serbia wanted and expected the EU to define a clear European policy on the migrant crisis.
