Steinmeier: Albania needs judicial reform before EU accession talks

Judicial reform is a precondition for talks about Albania's accession to the European Union, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during a visit to the country's capital Tirana on Tuesday.

"We need a democratic Albania with an independent judiciary [that is able to] fight corruption," Steinmeier said during a press conference with his Albanian counterpart Ditmir Bushati, according broadcaster RTSH.

Albania applied for EU membership in 2009 and was granted candidate status in 2014.

The country has made progress, but the European Commission says it must do more to improve the rule of law and the judicial system, fight corruption and organized crime, and protect fundamental rights, including property rights.
