Serbian prime minister urges fans to vote for Serbs in NBA

Serbia's Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic Tuesday called on the nation to vote for Serbian players in the US National Basketball Association All-Star ballot.

Vucic responded to a Twitter appeal from a San Antonio Spurs fan asking "Mr @SerbianPM Can we get HUGE copy & paste BOBAN Marjanovic #NbaVote."

Marjanovic is a 222cm centre who joined the Spurs from Red Star Belgrade for the ongoing season.

Vucic also added the names of two other Serbian players in the NBA - Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Nemanja Bjelica of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 45-year-old Serbian premier is an avid Red Star fan who says he trained basketball in his youth.

Basketball is one of the staple sports throughout the former Yugoslavia. Many fans have been following local players in the NBA since the pioneering days of European players in the 1980s, such as Drazen Petrovic, Vlade Divac and Toni Kukoc, in the world's strongest league.
