Serbian president approves early elections in April

Parliamentary elections called by Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic are to go ahead on April 24 following the approval of President Tomislav Nikolic on Friday.

Vucic says the snap elections, which fall halfway through his term, are necessary to secure a full four-year term for reforms that will put Serbia firmly on the path to EU membership.

With the opposition fragmented and on its back foot, Vucic's Progressive Party is the overwhelming favourite and is striving for a two-thirds majority it narrowly missed in the last polls.

A far-right, anti-Western nationalist during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, Vucic moved toward the centre over the past seven years and became a fervent supporter of Serbia's membership in the European Union.

His Progressive Party currently dominates the weak, fragmented opposition and appears set to repeat its strong March 2014 victory, when it won 158 of the 250 seats in parliament, eight short of the two-thirds majority required for key legislation.
