Robert De Niro visits Sarajevo locations evocative of 1992-95 siege

One of the world's greatest actors, Robert De Niro, who arrived in Sarajevo on Friday as a guest of honour at the Sarajevo Film Festival, visited during the day locations evocative of the siege of the city in the 1992-95 war.

The actor first visited the Jewish Cemetery, a 15th century cultural monument. Apart from being one of the most valuable monuments of the kind in Europe, during the 1992-95 war in the country the cemetery became known as a stronghold from where the Bosnian Serb army terrorised the city's residents with sniper rifle fire.

De Niro then visited Zlatiste on Mt Trebevic, a location that offers an extraordinary view of the city and he then visited a memorial museum at the site of a tunnel dug out below the city airport runway during the siege to connect Sarajevo with the free territory.

Edis Kolar, a museum custodian, said De Niro showed great interest in events related to the war and stayed at the museum for more than 40 minutes.

Later in the day, the actor will attend the opening of the Sarajevo Film Festival, to last until August 20.
