Macedonian political parties agree on steps towards early elections

Macedonia's four major political parties have agreed to a series of measures that would pave the way for early elections, though a date has yet to be chosen, media outlets reported Thursday.

The parties have until August 31 to decide whether the steps, which include media reforms and verification of the electoral register, have been fulfilled and elections can take place.

The deal signals a potential end to the months-long political impasse in the Balkan nation after illegal wiretaps were leaked in January 2015 by the opposition Social Democratic Union (SDSM) party that were meant to support its corruption allegations against former prime minister Nikola Gruevski and his ruling nationalist VMRO party.

Gruevski responded by accusing his rival of trying to blackmail him into resignation and charged him with treason.

Those two parties, as well as the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) and the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA), were the four involved in the deal that was reached on Wednesday.
