Macedonia gets caretaker cabinet to guide it through elections

Feuding Macedonian parties on Friday backed a caretaker cabinet tasked with governing until elections in December, which were called to end a potential dangerous political crisis.

In a 95-2 vote, legislators confirmed a long-delayed agreement on the conditions for the elections after months of political paralysis.

All major parties - two Macedonian and two ethnic Albanian - are taking part in the caretaker cabinet.

Parliamentary elections, a cornerstone of the deal the European Union brokered between conservative former longtime prime minister Nikola Gruevski and the Social Democratic opposition leader Zoran Zaev in July 2015, were already delayed twice in April and June.

The opposition previously refused to go the polls without access to state-controlled media and because of concerns over faulty voter registries.

Also, under the 2015 agreement, a special prosecutor is to investigate allegations that Gruevski illegally wiretapped 20,000 Macedonians to cement his grip on power.

Gruevski governed from 2006 until he resigned in January, in line with the agreement.
