Islamic Community in Bosnia dissolving extremist jamias

The Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina has taken concrete measures to ban parallel Muslim communities in the country as well self-styled imams, local media reported on Monday.

The leadership of the Islamic Community in BiH has sent a binding letter to all main imams in the country to talk by the end of this month with organisers and leaders of para-jamias and warn them that their activity is harmful to Islam and Muslims in BiH. In the Islamic community, a jamia is the equivalent of a parish.

According to Dnevni Avaz daily, the letter says it is necessary to urge organisers and leaders of para-jamias to stop, by the end of February at the latest, organising and holding religious activities in facilities used for prayer which are not sanctioned by the Islamic Community in BiH.

Alongside jamias led by imams officially appointed by the Islamic Community in BiH, there are those led by self-styled imams who preach radical Islamic views close to Wahhabism. Bosnian security services estimate that those isolated communities are being used to recruit terrorists.
