HDZ BiH leader satisfied with party results in Bosnia's local election

Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) leader Dragan Covic said on Monday that he was satisfied with the performance of his party in Sunday's local election but that frequent election cycles every two years were not a good solution for Bosnia and Herzegovina which was why he was in favour of holding local polls in parallel with general elections every four years.

Covic told the press in Sarajevo that the HDZ was satisfied with the fact that its representatives would be mayors in 18 municipalities or towns. Four years ago, the HDZ BiH won mayoral posts in 14 municipalities.

He also noted that the HDZ BiH and its partners had now ensured marked representation in municipal councils.

In this context Covic underscored the fact that his party's candidates had won seats in the local councils of communities where Croats were in small numbers such as Vares, Usora or the Posavina region.

Since 1996 Bosnia and Herzegovina has been holding general and local elections in different cycles every four years respectively, as a result of which the country has elections every two years, which prompted Covic to propose the merger of these cycles as of 2018.

The HDZ BiH will put forward a motion to this effect to the state-level parliament.
