Tariq Mahmoud Ahmed Al Sawah, an Egyptian national who was held in the US military base at Guantanamo, Cuba for 13 years because of his connections with the Al-Qaeda terrorist organisation, has been transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose nationality he possesses, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Security confirmed on Tuesday.
The ministry said in a brief statement that Al Sawah, age 58, has been transferred from Guantanamo to Bosnia and Herzegovina after this country joined the US programme for the reception of Guantanamo inmates suspected of links to terrorism. The United States plans to close down the Guantanamo detention facility.
Al Sawah spent the last 13 years in Guantanamo prison without being charged or tried.
