Conference urges Bosnian gov't to implement reforms for EU membership

Participants in an international scientific conference in Mostar on Thursday called on the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina to meet the necessary criteria and implement reforms as soon as possible so that the country could join the European Union and ensure a better life for its people.

"I am confident that this is the right way for us, even before formally joining the EU, to integrate into European processes and accept the standards of the European Union," said the Croat member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency, Dragan Covic, who co-sponsored the event with Croatia's President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

Covic told the conference, entitled "Economic System of the European Union and Adjustment of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Challenges and Prospects", that investment in science, innovation and development was the best way for Bosnia and Herzegovina to progress along the path to EU membership. He reiterated Bosnia and Herzegovina's commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration, expressing hope that the country would receive the status of a membership candidate by the end of 2017.

The conference was attended by economic experts from the region.
