Athens rejects asylum bids from Turkish soldiers who fled coup

The Greek government has rejected the asylum applications of six Turkish soldiers who landed a military helicopter in Greece amid the chaos of a failed coup in Turkey, media reports said Tuesday.

On July 15, a faction of Turkey's military announced it was seizing power, leading to a night of aerial dogfights, military blockades and street clashes that left more than 260 people dead.

The next day, eight soldiers - two majors, four captains and two non-commissioned officers - fled in a military helicopter to the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis, near the Turkish border, and immediately applied for asylum.

An asylum commission in Athens rejected the applications of six of the Turkish soldiers on Tuesday, according to news portal To Proto Thema, citing their attorney. A seventh officer's bid had been rejected at the end of September.

A decision on the asylum bid of the eighth soldier is expected to be announced in the coming days, the To Proto Thema report said.

Ankara officially requested the extradition of the soldiers in August, accusing them of participating in the failed coup.
